Ferroglobus ist eine <a href="Gattung_(Biologie)" title="Gattung (Biologie)">Gattung</a> von <a href="Archaeen" title="Archaeen">Archaeen</a> in der <a href="Familie_(Biologie)" title="Familie (Biologie)">Familie</a> <a href="Archaeoglobaceae" title="Archaeoglobaceae">Archaeoglobaceae</a>. <a href="Typusart" class="mw-redirect" title="Typusart">Typusart</a> ist F. placidus. Sie ist die einzige bisher veröffentlichte Art der Gattung, aus der <a href="Metagenomik" title="Metagenomik">Metagenomik</a> gibt es jedoch <a href="DNA-Sequenz" class="mw-redirect" title="DNA-Sequenz">Gensequenzen</a> (<a href="Contig#MAGs" title="Contig">MAGs</a>), die mindestens einer anderen Art der Gattung zugeordnet werden (Stand Anfang Oktober 2025).<a href="#cite_note-LPSN-1">[1]</a><a href="#cite_note-NCBI-2">[2]</a><a href="#cite_note-GTDB-3">[3]</a>

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Beschreibung">Beschreibung</h2></div>

Ferroglobus ist eine hyper<a href="Thermophil" class="mw-redirect" title="Thermophil">thermophile</a> Gattung, die phylogenetisch dem <a href="Phylum" class="mw-redirect" title="Phylum">Phylum</a> <a href="Methanobacteriota" title="Methanobacteriota">Methanobacteriota</a> (früher „Euryarchaeota“ genannt) zugehört.

Sie besteht aus einer einzigen gültig veröffentlichten Art, F. placidus, die aus Sedimenten <a href="Hydrothermalquelle" class="mw-redirect" title="Hydrothermalquelle">hydrothermaler Quellen</a> vor der Küste der <a href="Italien" title="Italien">italienischen</a> Insel <a href="Vulcano" title="Vulcano">Vulcano</a> isoliert wurde. F. placidus wächst am besten bei 85 <a href="Celsius" class="mw-redirect" title="Celsius">°C</a> und einem neutralen <a href="PH-Wert" title="PH-Wert">pH-Wert</a>. Bei Temperaturen unter 65 °C oder über 95 °C kann die Art nicht mehr wachsen. Die Zellen besitzen einen <a href="S-Layer" title="S-Layer">S-Layer</a> und <a href="Flagellum#Archaeen" title="Flagellum">Archaellen</a> (Archaeen-Geißeln).

Per <a href="Metagenomik" title="Metagenomik">Metagenomik</a> wurden Gensequenzen aus Proben vom <a href="Brothers_Volcano" title="Brothers Volcano">Brothers Volcano</a> (Brothers <a href="Tiefseeberg" title="Tiefseeberg">Seamount</a>, nordöstlich der <a href="Neuseeland" title="Neuseeland">neuseeländischen</a> <a href="Nordinsel_(Neuseeland)" title="Nordinsel (Neuseeland)">Nordinsel</a>) einer weiteren Art der Gattung zugeordnet.<a href="#cite_note-GTDB-3">[3]</a><a href="#cite_note-NCBI-2">[2]</a><a href="#cite_note-NCBI_Brothers-4">[4]</a>

Vom Stoffwechsel her gesehen unterscheidet sich Ferroglobus sehr stark von seinen Verwandten der Gattung <a href="Archaeoglobus" title="Archaeoglobus">Archaeoglobus</a>-

F. placidus war das erste hyperthermophile Archaeon, bei dem entdeckt wurde, dass es <a href="Anaerob" class="mw-redirect" title="Anaerob">anaerob</a> wächst. Dies geschieht, indem der Organismus <a href="Aromat" class="mw-redirect" title="Aromat">aromatische</a> Verbindungen wie <a href="Benzoat" class="mw-redirect" title="Benzoat">Benzoat</a> oxidiert, gekoppelt mit der Reduktion von Eisen(III) (Fe3+) zu Eisen(II) (Fe2+). <a href="Wasserstoff" title="Wasserstoff">Wasserstoffgas</a> (H2) und Sulfid (H2S) können ebenfalls als Energiequellen genutzt werden. Aufgrund seiner anaeroben Lebensweise wird <a href="Nitrat" class="mw-redirect" title="Nitrat">Nitrat</a> (NO3−) als terminaler <a href="Elektronenakzeptor" title="Elektronenakzeptor">Elektronenakzeptor</a> verwendet, wodurch es in <a href="Nitrit" class="mw-redirect" title="Nitrit">Nitrit</a> (NO2−) umgewandelt (<a href="Reduktion_(Chemie)" title="Reduktion (Chemie)">reduziert</a>) wird. <a href="Thiosulfat" class="mw-redirect" title="Thiosulfat">Thiosulfat</a> (S2O32−) kann ebenfalls als terminaler Elektronenakzeptor verwendet werden.

F. placidus war auch das erste entdeckte Archaeon, das Eisen anaerob oxidieren kann (gekoppelt an die Reduktion von Nitrat).

Es wird vermutet, dass Organismen ähnlich F. placidus auf der frühen, sauerstofffreien Erde zur Bildung von gebänderten Eisenformationen (<a href="B%C3%A4ndereisenerz" title="Bändereisenerz">Bändereisenerz</a>) geführt haben könnten, wie sie häufig in alten Gesteinen zu finden sind.

Der Gattungsname Ferroglobus setzt sich zusammen aus dem Präfix ‚Ferro-‘ von <a href="Latein" title="Latein">lateinisch</a> ferrum ‚Eisen‘ und dem Suffix ‚-globus‘ vom lat. Wort für ‚Kugel‘. Der Name Ferroglobus verweist somit auf (kleine) eisenhaltige Kügelchen.<a href="#cite_note-LPSN-1">[1]</a>

Das Art-<a href="Epitheton" title="Epitheton">Epitheton</a> der Typusart F. placidus kommt von <a href="Latein" title="Latein">lateinisch</a> placidus ‚friedlich‘, ‚friedliebend‘ und verweist auf die Reduktion von Nitrat, einem Bestandteil von Schießpulver.<a href="#cite_note-LPSN-1">[1]</a>
